Special testing conditions
Candidates who have a disability or other health-related needs which might interfere with their ability to sit the test in the standard manner, are advised to apply for special testing conditions through their online account as soon as possible after registration. All such requests must be submitted by no later than the closing time of LATE REGISTRATIONS. For conditions that occurred after the application deadline, please contact the GAMSAT Office for advice.
Before submitting an application for special testing conditions candidates are advised to read the ‘Inherent requirements for studying medicine in Australia and New Zealand’ guideline statement that has been accepted by all medical schools in Australia and New Zealand.
Candidates must submit the online form and supporting documentation for their request through their online account. The supporting documentation must be from a registered health practitioner and must give a clear diagnosis and information on the condition, indicate the impact of the condition in testing settings and include a statement as to what accommodations the health practitioner feels are appropriate for the candidate in testing settings. All supporting documentation must be typed on the health practitioner's official letterhead and include the date and title, name, registration number, contact details, and signature of the medical practitioner. The documentation must be no more than one year old for health-related needs or disabilities other than learning disabilities, and no more than three years old for learning disabilities. Applicants with learning disabilities should submit a copy of an appropriate educational psychologist’s report for consideration. If the report is more than three years old, it will still be accepted, as long as it is accompanied by a recent letter from a psychologist stating that the information in the report is still applicable to the candidate as they are today.
All information regarding special testing conditions will be treated confidentially and will not be forwarded to universities or admission authorities. Invigilators on the test day will be informed to the accommodations provided to candidates, but not of their condition. Candidates who wish that invigilators be alerted of the nature of their condition should indicate this in the application process.
All reasonable efforts are made to provide appropriate testing conditions for candidates' needs.
Some examples of conditions and possible accommodations are provided below. These examples are in no way exhaustive and should be used for guidance only. As requests are assessed on a case by case basis; some allowances listed below may not be relevant to a candidate's personal situation.
- Diabetes: permission to take blood glucose testing kit, insulin and food/drink into the test centre
- Hand/wrist/arm/shoulder injury: permission to mark answers in the test booklet and/or scribe provided for written section
- Hearing impairment: candidate seated at the front of the room and written instructions provided
- Visual impairment: colour or larger print test papers provided
There is no possibility of special consideration being given to test results. In no circumstances can scores be adjusted to account for any perceived disadvantage.
Candidates unable to sit the test during daylight hours on a Saturday for religious reasons are required to notify ACER in writing, no later than the closing date for LATE REGISTRATIONS, enclosing a supporting letter from their minister of religion. This letter must be printed on letterhead paper from the supporting church. Alternative testing arrangements are provided for approved candidates.
No other special consideration is available.
As GAMSAT is offered twice a year, from 2019 there will no longer be an option to sit GAMSAT on an alternative test day in March for religious reasons. Candidates who are unable to sit GAMSAT on a Saturday in March, must ensure to register to sit GAMSAT on a Wednesday in September instead. Candidates need to select the September sitting that enables them to apply for their preferred course(s) in the relevant university application round.
